The Crunchy SuperMom Guide to SeafoodSeafood

CSMPristinePristine: Fresh or frozen wild-caught fish from clean ocean waters.  Mercury is a concern with fish because it “binds to selenium and prevents it from performing its vital roles in the brain”  (Chris Kresser).  Therefore, if we eat only fish that have more selenium than mercury, we are offered protection from the toxicity of mercury. Freshwater fish often large variabilities with mercury while ocean fish are much more consistent.  Therefore, on the whole, ocean fish are the safer option.

Clean: Canned sardines or anchovies in water or olive oil, canned wild Alaskan salmon. Fresh or frozen wild shrimp from clean waters, and shellfish in season, again from clean waters. Avoid: Farmed fish, canned fish with oils other than olive oil, and fish with added flavorings, pilot whale, shark, tilefish, king mackerel and swordfish (all of these fish are too low in selenium).
