Healthy Eating Plan

healthy eating

A healthy eating plan for any human, especially little humans, and their families, is one that focuses on ethically, sustainably, and traditionally sourced “real” food that hasn’t been processed or modified.  Regardless of the food philosophy to which you subscribe, the basic underlying principle is real food. That’s right, Paleo, vegans, and traditional food consumers have something in common...they all should eat the same quality of food! Despite what all the popular authors say, no one diet style is right for every person. It is biologically impossible that humans would share the same dietary needs as a species so just follow these four steps to healthy eating. We like to say, “just eat real food” and then try to leave the diet dogma out of our discussions!

Step One: Define real food

Real food is nearly intact–similar to how you would find it in nature. Some real foods require soaking/sprouting and other modifications to best prepare them for consumption. Avoid overwhelm when starting your healthy eating journey. You might think buying everything labeled as organically is enough. While that is often a big improvement over some diets, it is actually not the best use of your money. A non-organic (conventional) apple is still better for your family, and bank account, than buying an “organic” packaged snack bar with questionable ingredients like rice syrup for sweetener. Getting on this path of replacing favorite snack foods with their organic version is one way to ruin a food budget and start off on the wrong foot. Instead, start small and purchase unprocessed food focusing on swapping out the most consumed conventional items with less processed or organic options. The best way to take this first step towards healthy eating is to use the Crunchy SuperMom Shopping Guide. Inside this guide, we explain how to make the best food choices for your budget and health. We have broken it down into categories including chicken and eggs; dairy; fats and oils; fruits and vegetables; grains; meat; nuts, seeds, and legumes; seafood and sweeteners.

Step Two: Crack the food label code

Did you know there are multiple levels of organicness and they all have their own color or code on the familiar organic label you see at the store? Before you get overwhelmed with the options and throw in the towel on buying real food, read our extremely helpful resource page Product Label Claims Exposed and the Animal Product Certifications Explained resource. Both of these, along with the handy download will help you stretch your dollar while making better food choices.

Step Three: Make a healthy eating plan

Buying whole food that fits your budget is only step one in your healthy eating plan. Cooking meals that everyone loves that fit into your time budget is a big hurdle too, one that you can clear easily with the help of the Crunchy SuperMom meal planning guide.
