5 Tips for Improving Toddler Behavior Through Connection - Show #027

A connection is what we really are striving for as parents, but with a toddler’s strong will, it can leave you butting heads instead of connecting like you would like to. Your toddler’s strong will can come as a shock in the beginning. That will of a toddler is instant gratification of all needs. From birth until age 3, a conscious will doesn’t truly exist. This may be of some comfort to you when you reflect on your toddler’s behavior after a challenging day. Until the period of 3-6 years, your child is merely absorbing information and reacting in mostly reflexive ways. Controlling or forcing a child’s behavior at this age is futile and will only result in a breakdown of her development. Instead, there are some simple steps that you can follow that will allow you to connect with your toddler as well as positively shape their behavior.

THE TIPS

Make sure your toddler knows the family routine, what is going to happen, and try to have predictable routines that your little one understands and can anticipate. Now, that is sort of three things in one, but the basic idea is to have routines and communicate those to your little one. Let them know what is going to happen and when.

Have realistic expectations about what your toddler can handle as well as the stage they are in developmentally. Home is the ideal place for most toddlers, but we do have to leave the house sometimes especially when you have older kids. This means that you have to set up your day so you can try to leave the house at times that it will work around naps and fussy times. And during those times, and especially if you have to leave at a time that is not ideal, you can have sensory type “go” bags packed for your toddler to help keep them entertained and calm. We recommend having these pre-packed for the specific activity you have to take your toddler out for so you can literally just grab it before you walk out the door….a “go” bag. There are lots of ideas for these here so you can plan out your own “go” bags.
