Benefits of Gelatin

healthy eating

This is our staple homemade gummy snacks using gelatin. I have tried many and there are many that turn out...some of the time. This one almost always turns out perfectly and is primarily adapted from Mommypotamus. It is all about the ratios.

3 TB gelatin (Red label Great Lakes gelatin, Vital Proteins gelatin or Zint Nutrition gelatin.

Do not attempt to use the collagen from these brands which will not gel at all)

1/3 C fruit juice (freshly squeezed preferably)

3 TB raw, local honey

1/2 tsp flavor booster like lemon extract or orange extract

Have all your ingredients set out and ready to go because gelatin hardens quickly. Bring the fruit juice to a gentle boil and stir in the honey. Sprinkle the gelatin over the liquid and stir until dissolved. Add in the flavor booster, if using, then pour into gelatin molds and chill for 4-8 hours. We have these molds and love them.

Here are a few more recipes to try for vitamin C gummies and Autoimmune Paleo approved gummies.  My kids aren't fans of fruit puree based gummies but I try them often just in case they change their minds. You can even experiment with adding fish oil to the gummies to make your own health supplement or vitamin C powder for an immune-boosting treat!

Benefits of Gelatin

  • Skin, bone and nail health. Gelatin is naturally found in our bodies.
  • Dietary collagen has more of a chance of promoting skin elasticity and potential anti-aging benefits than any topical cream or miracle serum on the market.
  • Possible reduction of cellulite, wrinkles and stretch marks with frequent ingestion of quality gelatin.
  • Gelatin contains high levels of amino acids that can promote digestion and help heal intestinal permeability (leaky gut).

With research, you can find dozens of reasons to consider grass-fed gelatin. Not all gelatin or gelatin-like substances are as beneficial as pure, grass fed gelatin. Our family has used Great Lakes gelatin but we primarily purchase Vital Proteins and Zint Nutrition now. Zint and Vital Proteins are comparable in composition and sourcing. Zint is by far the most affordable option. The results are always consistent. Remember that collagen can be added to smoothies and the texture will stay the same. However, if it is labeled as "gelatin", this is what you need to make excellent gummy snacks, homemade marshmallows, and even mousse! If making homemade gummy snacks isn't motivation enough for you to try gelatin, take a look at these Paleo N'Oatmeal Pies. Our family makes these often. They are off the hook amazing!   Save Save
